An uncomfortable wedding…

Many times, we end up in situations that we didn’t want to be in the first place. Some of these happen by chance, some due to bad luck and some of them due to sheer stupidity. I’ve had many such highly uncomfortable situations and needless to say, I’ve not enjoyed any one of these situations.

The worst of these situations should be when I went to my ex-girlfriend’s wedding. Now, usually that’s not so bad if you’ve had a civil break up and have been on decent talking terms since you broke up.

The first uncomfortable situation comes when you show up at the wedding all dressed up in a suit and everyone but you is dressed really sober. You look so much out of place that people keep staring at you.

Then you find that you’re the first one to reach. Not a bad thing to be punctual. Whats worse is that you call up a couple of people and find out that nobody else from your group is coming for the wedding.

Then her sister spots you and comes up to talk to you, you know, to make all the guests feel welcome. Normally, that is fine. You get to talk to someone instead of sitting and looking around blankly. But then, an aunt tags along with the sister and asks

Aunt : So you’re xxx’s friend from School?

You : Yes.

A : So how come only you’re here? None of your friends came?

Y : Uh… huh… gothilla aunty.

Then she turns to the sister and says “Yaaru hudugiru bandhilva school group inda?” (Translated: Didn’t any girls come from the school group?)

This is the point at which you just want to get up and run out but can’t because, well you’ve been noticed now

Then you stand in the long queue to meet the couple and when you get on to the stage to greet the couple, your ex’s mom, who ‘knew that you were seeing her daughter but chose to ignore it’ comes to talk to you. Of course she’s thinking ‘Why’s only this fellow here?’ But its a tradition to be nice to everyone who’s come to ‘bless’ her daughter. So she’s like “Hi Vinay. How are you! I’ve not seen you for a long time… Anyways, where are the others? Are you here alone?” whereas she’s actually thinking ‘Why in the world has this idiot shown up alone? Should I ask someone to keep an eye on him?’ And then of course, the Dad comes along, talking to you really nicely, all the time thinking “Why the hell is he here?”

But the most uncomfortable part of the whole night comes when you go up to the couple to greet them and your overly friendly ex-girlfriend holds your hand in hers for longer than is necessary when introducing you to her husband, who’s all the while thinking behind the smile ‘why the f*$( did u show up punk? Meet me in a dark road after my honeymoon and i’ll take this up with you’

By this time, having gone through one uncomfortable situation after another, you finally go to the dining hall to have some food, of course, all by yourself when suddenly you hear a woman calling out your name and you turn to see that its a distant aunt who’s a friend of the groom’s mother.

Distant Aunt : Hi Vinay! How are you? How do you know the groom

You : Hi aunty… Uh… uh… actually I’m a friend of the bride

DA : Oh really? Then where are your other friends?

You : I d-d-d-don’t know… I’m th-th-t-the only one that came

DA : (with a wry smile) ohhh… howda. Sari sari… Enjoy the meal

And the distant aunt runs off with new juicy gossip to tell the other aunts.

And this is the point when you just shove your plate in the bin and get the hell out of the marriage hall never to be seen again in the vicinity until the wedding is over!
