Book Review: If God was a banker

This was a book that was at home because my brother was reading it… Is by an Indian author, so I didn’t know what to expect.
The book is about two friends, Sundeep and Swami, who are top IIM grads, one from IIM-B and another from IIM-A. Not surprisingly, one is a flamboyant, flirtatious extrovert with questionable values and another one is a introvert, tam-brahm with humble upbringing and strong morals and values. No prizes for guessing who is who

These two guys are picked up by an emerging MNC in the country. Both of them impress their boss on the first day and are given plum postings and major responsibilities within a week of them joining the company as freshers. One of them sticks to his morals and values throughout whereas the other veers away from the line of morality to achieve success. They both have a meteoric rise in their careers. Sundeep uses unfair means to jack up the numbers, get promotions, make money, etc but Swami sticks to his morals, works hard and achieves success. Finally, Sundeep’s bubble bursts and he’s pulled up for all the atrocities that he’s committed over the years and removed from a company that he has served so well for the last 15 years.

A plain narrative story in simple words with a little bit of sex and sleaze thrown in between. It doesn’t captivate you, at the same time it doesn’t make you throw it away. A moderate page turner.

Actually its almost like a mediocre bollywood movie, good vs bad, evil vs good, indulgence vs abstinence.

Above all, what struck me was the quality of editing of the book. Now I’ve read a few Indian authors like Chetan Bhagat, R K Narayan, etc. But in no other Indian publication have I seen editing of a book to be as bad as this. I can’t believe that there are spelling mistakes and numerous instances of incorrect usage of English. It is so bad that in one instance the name Suneel suddenly becomes Sunil in another page!
If you’ve ever wanted to read this book, just read it for time pass… Just about OK
